Xerox support promised someone was coming and kept extending the timeline. Weeks in, you're still stuck.

That's the situation we got a call about from a creative agency in downtown Los Angeles. The office manager had done everything right, spent real money on parts, and was still watching client-facing booklets and presentation materials come out ruined. The one thing they hadn't tried was the transfer belt. We'll come back to that. First, it helps to understand why three different components can all produce what looks like the same kind of defect.

That means more than one component can produce a defect that looks nearly identical from the outside.

On the C9000, there are four color-specific drum cartridges: R1 Black, R2 Cyan, R3 Magenta, and R4 Yellow. Per Xerox's own service KB, a defect that tracks to a single color and stays consistent can point to that color's drum. But when a defect crosses color channels, changes character, or forms a pattern that doesn't correspond to a single drum station, that implicates a shared component.

The two shared components in the transfer path are the BTR and the IBT.

The intermediate transfer belt (IBT) carries the composite color image, built up one color layer at a time from all four drum stations, before any of it reaches paper. Think of it as the staging surface where the full-color image is assembled. The bias transfer roller (BTR) then handles the second transfer, pressing that assembled image from the belt onto the paper. They are separate parts with separate failure modes. Replacing one does not rule out the other.

Repeating lines or grid-like patterns across a page — as opposed to a single, uninterrupted streak — can indicate wear or damage on the intermediate transfer belt or the second transfer roller rather than any individual drum. Why Replacing the Drum and BTR Did Not Fix the Xerox C9000 Print Quality Defect

When the agency office manager called us, they had already replaced the BTR, replaced the drum, and cleaned drum components. The defects were still there and had changed character over time. Their own read on the situation was direct: "The only thing I haven't done is change the transfer belt."

That's the right place to land after exhausting the drum and BTR. If the defect survived drum replacement, it isn't a drum problem. The symptom progression also points in that direction. A failed drum in one color station produces a consistent, single-color stripe at a predictable repeating interval. The Printhead Lens Factor: The Step Most People Skip

Before concluding the transfer belt is the culprit, there is one more step worth confirming — and Xerox's own documentation lists it as required before any component replacement begins.

The C9000 has four printhead LED lenses, one per color station. Each has a dedicated cleaning tool that stays attached to the machine. The cleaning procedure involves pushing the cleaning rod in until it stops and then pulling it out, repeated two more times. Contamination on these lenses is invisible to casual inspection. The value of this step is in confirming whether the defect pitch matches a specific drum or roller before buying another part. When to Stop Swapping Parts and Call a Technician
